Let’s face it, household chores aren’t most peoples idea of a fun time! That said, there are ways to turn those mundane tasks into moments of calm and even a little bit of joy. You can transform your dishwashing and dusting sessions into more relaxing experiences. No meditation cushion required – just an open mind and a willingness to embrace the everyday. Here’s how you can get started!
Set the Intention
Before diving into your chores, take a moment to set an intention. Remind yourself that you are dedicating this time to care for your living space mindfully. Whether your intention is creating a clean and organized environment or simply finding peace in the process, clarify your purpose for doing the chores
Create the Mood
Create a space where you can focus on the task at hand without distractions. You might like to light a candle or put on some music. It could be relaxing music, or something more upbeat depending on what mood you are going for. You might want to dance around with the mop like the girl in ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’! (Who remembers that?!) Alternatively, you might prefer to put something tranquil on. Whichever you choose will likely set your pace. Being mindful is all about being aware, however you choose to do the chores. You set your own pace.
Engage Your Senses
Mindfulness is all about being fully present in the moment. Engage your senses as you tackle each task. Notice the texture of the surfaces you’re cleaning, the scent of the cleaning products, the sound of water running, or the feel of warm laundry fresh from the dryer. By bringing your attention to your senses, you anchor yourself in the present moment.
Be Aware of Your Breath
Your breath is a powerful tool for cultivating mindfulness. Throughout your chores, periodically check in with your breath. Take slow, deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. Use your breath to help bring your attention back to the present whenever your mind starts to wander.
Practice Gratitude
Instead of maybe grumbling about having to scrub the toilet again (I think we’ve probably all moaned about what a horrible job that is at some point!), try flipping the script. Think about how lucky you are to have a roof over your head and a toilet to scrub. Practicing gratitude can seriously shift your perspective and make those chores feel more positive. As you clean, express appreciation for the home you’re caring for and the people who share it with you. Reflect on the simple pleasures of having a comfortable space to call your own (whether you own or rent, it’s still your own space).
Stay Present
It’s natural for your mind to wander, especially during repetitive tasks. When you catch yourself drifting into thoughts about the past or future, gently guide your focus back to the present moment. Notice the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. By staying present, you free yourself from unnecessary stress and anxiety.
Embrace Imperfection
Let go of the need for perfection when doing your chores. Instead of striving for flawless cleanliness, focus on doing the best you can with the time and energy you have. Accept that some tasks may not be completed to your ideal standards, and that’s okay. Embracing imperfection fosters self-compassion and reduces feelings of frustration or inadequacy. This is particularly important if you are not able bodied. Try not to overdo it. As a disabled person myself, this is one that I have had to accept and I’ll admit that it hasn’t been easy and has taken time. That said, with practice comes progress and I am finally in a place now where I have made peace with it, so it is absolutely possible to get to that place.
Find Joy in the Ordinary!
Finally, allow yourself to find joy in the ordinary moments of household chores. Whether it’s the satisfaction of a sparkling clean kitchen or the warmth of freshly laundered sheets, take pleasure in the simple joys that these tasks bring.
